How a sand filter septic system works

Effluent leaves the septic tank and is dosed evenly over a bed of carefully graded sand. As it trickles through, biological treatment removes most of the remaining organics and solids. The cleaner effluent is then dispersed to a soil treatment area — or, on some designs, recirculated for a second pass before final dispersal.
